Laos is projected to consume 960,000 metric tons of bananas by 2026, up 2.2 percent on average each year since 2017. Japan was the largest consumer in 2021, at 834,000 metric tons, while Laos came in 19th place. China, Indonesia and Brazil followed in second, third and fourth place. The country is also expected to produce 1.4 million metric tons of bananas by 2026, a 3.6 percent year-on-year average growth since 1966. Burundi led the 2021 rankings with 1.2 million metric tons, while Laos was 22nd. China, Indonesia and Brazil were the next three largest producers.
