Year-on-year, consumption has risen steadily since 1966, when it was only 18,000 metric tons. In 2021, the Dominican Republic ranked 46th in the world for pepper consumption, overtaken by Azerbaijan, which had 50,000 metric tons. Mexico, Indonesia and Spain made up the rest of the top four.
