Costa Rica's food waste treatment and generation is set to grow and fall in the next five years. In 2021, Costa Rica came in 30th place in the rankings for food waste treatment and generation. Slovakia overtook with 1.5 million metric tons and Germany, Japan and Mexico came in second, third and fourth places respectively. By 2026, Costa Rica is expected to treat 1.5 million metric tons of food waste, growing at an average rate of 1% year-on-year. Since 2015, its food waste treatment has grown at a rate of 3.1% year-on-year. Meanwhile, the country is predicted to generate 1.2 million metric tons of food waste by 2026, decreasing 1.2% year-on-year on average. From 2015, its food waste generation has increased 1.6% year-on-year. In 2021, Slovakia was ahead in this measure with 1.3 million metric tons, while China, Germany and Japan came in second, third and fourth places respectively.
