South African demand for chromium is set to grow 1.8% year-on-year, reaching 334,640 kilograms by 2026. This is an increase of 34,520 kilograms since 2021. In 2005, the demand was 13.9% higher than it is now. In 2021, South Africa ranked 20th in the world in terms of chromium imports, with Australia taking the lead with 300,120 kilograms. Germany, the Netherlands and Japan ranked second, third and fourth, respectively. South African chromium exports have taken a sharp downturn. In 2018, exports reached only 1,820 kilograms, down 92.9% from the 25,550 kilograms exported in 2017. Since 2005, supply has decreased by 53.1%. In 2018, South Africa ranked 39th in the world, with Botswana taking the lead at 1,820 kilograms. Poland, France and the United Kingdom ranked second, third and fourth, respectively.
