This marks a marginal decrease from around 134 million Tonne Kilometers in 2023, with an average annual drop of 0.1%. The long-term trend, however, tells a different story. Since 1975, Italy's shipping freight volume has grown significantly, with an annual increase of 12.5%. Despite this historical growth, Italy ranked 16th globally in 2023. Sweden narrowly edged out Italy in the rankings, recording the same freight volume for 2023. Higher up the list, the Netherlands, Germany, and Romania secured the second, third, and fourth positions, respectively.
