The country has seen a steady rise in emissions of around one percent annually since 1976. In 2021, South Africa was the 12th highest emitter of greenhouse gases, with Saudi Arabia overtaking it in the rankings with 440.17 million metric tons. The United States, India and Russia took the top three spots.
