Global greenhouse gas emissions are projected to reach 36 billion metric tons by 2026. This figure is up 0.7% on average each year since 1976, when emissions were at 34.4 billion metric tons. In 2021, China led the way in terms of emissions, with 10.3 billion metric tons. The US, India and Russia took second, third and fourth place, respectively. North Korea saw a 13.8% average year-on-year increase since 1976, while Estonia experienced a 11.6% decrease over the same period.
