Americans spent an astonishing $3.7 trillion on healthcare in 2015. That's more than the entire GDP of many countries around the world. It represents an increase of 5.8% from the year before, a remarkable figure given the stagnant economic growth of recent years. Healthcare spending now accounts for 17.8% of the U.S. economy and is the biggest single sector of the country's overall spending.
