European Geothermal Power Energy Supply by Country

In 2024, Italy remained the leader in geothermal energy supply in Europe, with a contribution of 5.41 million tonnes of oil equivalent (MTOE), despite a slight decline of 5.4% from 2023. Iceland followed with 4.13 MTOE, experiencing a significant 43% decrease. France and Germany showed positive growth with year-on-year increases of 3.03% and 8.72% respectively, reaching 0.50539 and 0.45838 MTOE. The Netherlands saw the highest percentage increase of 15.04%, reflecting strong investment and development. Other notable increases were observed in Croatia (41.31%) and Poland (4.86%). Conversely, Denmark, Slovakia, and Macedonia faced declines greater than 3%, indicating potential challenges in these markets.

Future trends to watch for in the European geothermal power sector include:

  • Growth in emerging markets such as Croatia and the Netherlands, which showed substantial year-on-year increases.
  • Stabilization or further growth in major markets like France and Germany, driven by continued investment in renewable energy.
  • Potential recovery or further decline in markets that experienced significant drops, such as Iceland and Macedonia.
  • Increasing technological advancements and investments in geothermal energy, which may drive higher efficiency and output in less mature markets.
