This marks an increase from around 1,590 terajoules in 2023, reflecting an annual growth rate of 1.8%. Since 2010, the demand for geothermal energy in Bulgaria has risen by an average of 1.9% per year. In 2023, Bulgaria ranked 11th globally in geothermal energy consumption, with Austria slightly ahead at the same 1,590 terajoules. Leading the global rankings are Iceland, France, and Germany, occupying the second, third, and fourth positions respectively. On the production side, Bulgaria's geothermal energy generation is expected to reach approximately 442 gigawatt-hours by 2028, up from about 427 gigawatt-hours in 2023. This represents an annual growth rate of 0.5%. Since 2010, the country's geothermal supply has increased at an annual rate of 1.2%. Similar to consumption, Bulgaria ranked 11th in geothermal energy generation in 2023, just behind Austria. Iceland, France, and Germany remain the top three nations in this category as well.
