Since 1975, global demand for air transport has increased at an annual rate of 1.2%. In 2023, the United States led the world in air transport traffic with around 10.3 million departures. Following closely behind were China, India, and Canada, occupying the second, third, and fourth spots, respectively. Notably, Syria experienced a dramatic growth in air transport traffic, surging by 125% year on year. In stark contrast, North Korea saw a significant decline, with air transport traffic dropping by 55% annually since 1975.
