South African butter consumption is projected to reach 28,500 metric tons by 2026, up from 24,000 in 2021. This is a growth of 2.9% year on year, and since 2017, demand has risen by 1.4%. South Africa was 38th in the world ranking in 2021, behind Argentina at 24,000 metric tons. Germany, France and Russia were the second, third and fourth highest consumers respectively. South African butter production, however, is set to drop 0.8% year on year to 12,800 metric tons in 2026, down from 13,430 in 2021. Since 1966, supply has decreased by 0.7% year on year, with South Africa 43rd in the world ranking in 2021, behind Lithuania at 13,430 metric tons. New Zealand, Germany and France were the world’s second, third and fourth largest producers respectively.
