The volume of Cypriot container traffic is projected to decline to approximately 283,000 Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) by 2028, down from around 317,000 TEUs in 2023, marking an annual decrease of 1.8%. Since 2012, Cypriot demand for container traffic has been falling steadily by 5.3% each year. In the global ranking for 2023, Cyprus was positioned at 89th, just behind Cuba, which also reported 317,000 TEUs. Leading the rankings were Slovenia, the United States, and Singapore, occupying the second, third, and fourth spots, respectively. In terms of container handling at ports, Cyprus is expected to see a slight increase to 321,000 TEUs by 2028 from 320,000 TEUs in 2023, reflecting a marginal annual growth rate of 0.1%. Despite this modest growth, the Cypriot market has seen a decline of 5.2% per year since 2007. In 2023, Cyprus ranked 21st globally in container handling, with Croatia surpassing it by handling the same volume of 320,000 TEUs. Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium held the second, third, and fourth positions, respectively, in this category.
