Maltese Fish Production is projected to climb to approximately 22,500 metric tons by 2028, up from around 19,000 metric tons in 2023, marking an average annual growth rate of 2.6%. Despite this upward trend, the nation's supply has seen a slight decline of 0.2% per year since 1995. In 2023, Malta ranked 61st globally in fish production, with Portugal just ahead, also producing around 19,000 metric tons. Leading the global rankings were Indonesia, India, and Bangladesh, holding the second, third, and fourth positions respectively. Meanwhile, Maltese fish consumption is expected to decline to about 5,300 metric tons by 2028, from roughly 5,800 metric tons in 2023, averaging a yearly decrease of 1.3%. Since 2019, demand for fish in Malta has decreased by 1.7% annually.
