Japanese fish production is projected to decline over the next five years, reaching approximately 873,000 metric tons by 2028. This marks a decrease from the 939,000 metric tons expected in 2023, reflecting an annual growth rate decline of 1.2%. The downward trend in fish supply has been ongoing since 1965, with an average yearly decrease of 1.9%. In 2023, Japan ranked 12th globally in fish production, with Thailand surpassing it with the same figure of 939,000 metric tons. Leading the rankings were Indonesia, India, and Bangladesh, occupying the second, third, and fourth positions, respectively. On the consumption side, Japanese fish consumption is also anticipated to see a slight decline. By 2028, consumption is expected to fall to around 1,710,000 metric tons from 1,740,000 metric tons in 2023, averaging a yearly decrease of 0.2%. Since 2019, Japanese demand for fish has dropped by an average of 0.3% annually.
