Bulgarian fish production is projected to climb to approximately 18,300 metric tons by 2028, up from around 16,200 metric tons in 2023. This represents an average annual growth rate of 1.9%. Despite the recent uptick, the country's fish supply has seen a slight decline of 0.2% per year since 1965. In 2023, Bulgaria ranked 66th globally in fish production, trailing behind Madagascar with an identical production of 16,220 metric tons. Leading the rankings were Indonesia, India, and Bangladesh, holding the second, third, and fourth spots respectively. On the consumption front, Bulgarian fish consumption is expected to reach roughly 22,800 metric tons by 2028, up from about 22,000 metric tons in 2023. This marks a modest annual growth rate of 0.6%. Since 2019, the country's demand for fish has increased by an average of 0.7% each year.
