Burundi's tobacco production saw a significant decline in 2023, with total output falling to approximately 98 metric tons. This marks a sharp decrease of 38% compared to the previous year, where production stood at around 159 metric tons. The downward trend in Burundian tobacco supply has been ongoing since 1966, showing an average annual reduction of 24%. As a result, the country ranked 101st in global tobacco production in 2023. Guyana matched Burundi's output, also producing 98 metric tons, and moved ahead in the rankings. On the global stage, India, Brazil, and Zimbabwe secured the second, third, and fourth positions respectively in tobacco production.
